August Greetings!

Woah there! Is it EVER calienté here in Arizona! So, how do I manage to stay cool?  This “Zonie” goes out only if necessary. I go pick up groceries which I order online and pick up anything I can through a drive thru window either early in the morning or late evening. This is the first year in which I got in the pool and I felt like a meatball boiling in a scorching pot of boiling soup! I couldn’t believe it! With temps reaching near 120 and the lows at night in the 100’s, the pool water had no chance of cooling off. But no complaints because I am content staying indoors to create.

Collage, paying homage to Catherine of Aragon.

July Greetings!

July Greetings!

Backtracking a bit since I last wrote, I did go to Salem, Ma and had a really nice time! I stayed at The Hawthorne Hotel in the infamous Room 325. I am very in tuned into feelings and vibes (an INFJ curse!) and I didn’t feel anything paranormal. That was okay because I love staying at historical hotels, there is so much inspiration in every nook and cranny.
Here are a few photos from my trip.

One of my fave moments was climbing the secret narrow, steep, and claustrophobic stairway into the attic at The House of Seven Gables. Please google it to see! So much history there. I really wish I’d had more time to explore! Field Trip anyone?

After my return, I took a Dinah Wakley class at Scraps of Love in Peoria. Such a wonderful time taking the class with my two artsy friends. Dinah is very generous with her techniques, ideas, and humor! YES! She had us all chuckling which of course made EVERYTHING fun!

Mini Tin Shrines has been my current art projects. They are all spiritual in nature with a message within each which says “Never Give Up.”  My hope is that this will reach someone at just the right time.

Lastly is ‘Guitar Maria’ a wooden 5” x 7” shrine, embellished with an eclectic array of adornments from wood, fabric, and metal, to crystals and glitter!

The shrines will be for sale in my Etsy store,

Each will come with a stand and a special postcard I had printed especially for this project.

Stay cool as best you can in this scorching heat!

May Greetings to all!

May Greetings to all!

I hope everyone is enjoying not only indoor art life but the beauty of outdoors as well.

To catch you up on what’s new with me…. I currently have my Etsy store PsILoveSteve on a temporary hiatus. At first I was on ‘vacation mode’ to attend a “Girls Weekend” up north in the mountains, but that ended up turning into Covid for 5 of us. It was concerning for me due to age and asthma. The fatique and difficulty breathing was difficult but thankfully I got some medication right away to prevent me from being hospitalized. So, as I’ve been recuperating I have continued to work on a few art projects.

The ATC exchanges continue with themes of;

Back To Basics: Just Paper, No Scissors, No Embellishments!

And

Zentangles and Doodles

What is a ‘Girls Weekend’ without going junk jaunting? We had a blast discovering new places and scoring some fantastic buys! I was elated to score on my latest obsession… ROLODEXES!!!! I couldn’t believe it!

I began arting on the ROLO type…the spinner kind. I love the look of them when they’re filled up. I am working on both sides of those cards. I have found a 2 hole file punch that is perfect for punching through the holes I collaged over! Cards are 4” x 2.25”

Then I found the flat type which allows me to go a little taller than the spinner kind. On those I am simply dating the backs and writing a little blurb about my collage. Cards are 5” x 3”

And then last but not least, while treasure hunting I found an unusual wood primitive piece. It looked like an open box with a centered medal rod towards the back. The lid was hinged to open and close. I immediately ‘saw’ a primitive filing system! I took it to the register and the shop owner asked me if I had seen the cards which belong to it? I had not. He went to look for them and found them someplace else (well hidden!) The cards had smoke and fire damage, they were warped, and looked like something nobody would even want….except for ME!!! On the backside of the box the remnant of an old label “The Simple Accountant”, made by Fremont Account File Co. in the early 1900’s. Although rare, they can still be found to purchase on the internet. I have approximately 3” of space to fill it up with new cards, made to look old. This one has a single hole punch. Cards are 9” x 4”.

Next week I will be traveling to Salem, MA. staying at the historic Hawthorne Hotel. In case you are wondering, in Room 325. This has been on my bucket list, I can’t wait to tell you all about it!

February Greetings!

This month I’ve been focused on checking things off on my home’s ‘to-do’ list. The exterior is getting painted, with a color change! The rod iron fencing got restored with new gates built. Today the house got a major termite treatment, they had to drill the entire perimeter. My pool pump and motor had to get replaced, and the spa will get a tile restoration before the month is up. Goodness!

To deal with all that’s going on I have found solace in the studio. I have been ‘stickering’ non-stop. I started a sticker journal in late 2022 . After purchasing several on Etsy amongst other sites, I decided to purchase a Phomemo Thermal Printer, which has been a whole lot of fun to use! I did a lot of research on it and am really pleased with it. The paper choices have been wonderful, some of the papers have a 20 year life span which I didn’t even know existed with thermal prints. I also began using my Canon Ivy 2 which prints rectangular and round stickers. The print quality on Zink paper is outstanding. It’s such a bonus to not have to purchase ink for those two printers.

I am in a monthly ATC exchange with a few local friends which has me dusting the cobwebs off my mixed media supplies. Our goal is to just take it easy and enjoy. Our latest theme is “Just One Book” which means all imagery can come from only ONE book. Oh my! I have a difficult time with art rules but the challenges have been good.  Here are a few samples of my ATC’s.

As of yesterday I just completed a 12” x 12” mixed media canvas. It began as a puddle of walnut ink on the surface and sat as such for about a week. Then I began to see something, from there it transformed to what you now see. Something incredible happened upon completion, as I photographed it on my phone. I was trying to copy the image to share with my friend. In doing so, a light within the image kept circling a portion of the painting, over and over. I’d never seen anything like that before! I watched in disbelief until I was finally able to copy it onto a text message. This is what copied over, not the entire painting. I was in awe but MORE so when I learned (within seconds) that an aunt of mine had passed suddenly and recently, unbeknownst to anyone. She was my grandmother’s youngest sister and passed away on my grandmother’s recent birthday. I now had a name for my painting. Ethereal Beings.

Wishing everyone love and affection on Valentine’s Day and every day.

January Greetings!

I hope everyone is doing great in this New Year 2023!

I have enjoyed spending more time in my studio this past year with my focus being my Etsy store, PSILOVESTEVE.

My Etsy store opened in 2022. I sell a variety of vintage mixed media supplies as well as greeting cards; either die cut or original art. My passion has always been paper arts. I love altering vintage ephemera into new life which may tug at someone’s heart strings, be it for the present or past moments in their lives.

Setting up my store brought challenges in the beginning along with a few lessons learned along the way. Lessons on photographing, descriptions, and shipping. The joy it brings to hear my phone do the ‘jingling change’ sound (that means I just made a sale!) is not only satisfying but an affirmation of my commitment.

My newest listings will be all about Love and Valentines and Sparkles. Here is a sneak peak of my Love Pockets. Of course these are the perfect little tokens of love and appreciation to gift throughout the year.

2021: My Year of Change

Greetings my friends in art.

I am still reveling in my solitude at Silver Moon Studios. I believe 2020 was a visionary year for many people. Speaking for myself, a Covid quarantine had to transpire in order to ground myself and reflect on where I am headed not only in art, but in life. Which brings me to this year 2021, my year of change. Before Covid, I lived only for the moment with no direction. Complete randomness and at times chaos followed. It was a wild good time, but not wise in the long run. I am changing. I am focusing on good health, losing weight, embracing my age and looking forward to a healthy future of mind, body, and spirit. My new path involves self improvement, art workshops, art challenges and goals.

I have been taking a Kate Thompson online workshop. Although I admire her style, I find it to be very intimidating and scary. I am not comfortable sketching. My prior work has all been collage, cut and paste. It’s my comfort zone. So I find myself procrastinating to get started and once I begin, I am off on a gazillion tangents. Here are a few practice sketches of what I’ve been doing.

Part of the workshop involves mark making and watercolor florals.

This led to my tangent of loose abstract watercolor florals onto original antique postcards. It’s amazing that the addresses are minimal compared to what we have now. The backsides, like the fronts have either been written from an ink well, pencil, or a typed order confirmation. Date ranges 1898-1911

Here’s a shared lesson for anyone. Don’t freak out if you mess something up. Look at it as an alternative means to a different creation. You’re the only one who will know! Here’s an example of a postcard in which I had painted the entire surface with watercolor and acrylics, and was loving it. Until I added my own handwriting…my pen skipped and made an awful mess! I tried to fix it, but only made it worse. Of course I was disappointed, I had liked it before the writing, but ceased the opportunity for a transformation.

I covered up the writing with chalk paints.

Reworked the spot with watercolors

Added another flower and finished detailing the card.

Remember this, if it happens…it was SUPPOSED to!

Always remember to live, love, and laugh in COLOR!!!

Maui Trip

We all know this has been a very difficult year due to Covid and all which has ensued; lockdowns, mask wearing, business shutdowns, loss of jobs, racial injustices, marches, riots, looting, and unfortunately deaths of family and friends. As if this pandemonium wasn’t enough, some of my closest friends have been dealing with their own serious health issues making this an even more trying year for them and for myself, because I care for them deeply.

In 2020 I learned that I have an arrhythmia, which frightened me because that is what my son Steve passed away from, in his sleep. I felt alone living by myself and worrying “what if I die in my sleep and my dogs are not being taken care of.” I seem like a warrior to some but truth be told, deep down I am a Nervous Nellie. It was recommended that I get a cardiac ablation. Instead I opted to cut out caffeine and get on a few meds. I’m only saying this because feeling so alone in 2020 and doing my best to comply with health protocols recommended has not been easy for me, knowing that my autoimmune disorder puts me at risk. In fact I’ve hated it BUT I comply to keep myself, my family, and especially my dad from getting sick.

So one day sitting here and dreaming of escaping, I saw how low the fares were to fly to Hawaii. I had never been there. I took a chance and booked my ticket to fly into Honolulu on Sept 30th. I was looking forward to going, just run away for a brief moment, somewhere…ANYWHERE! Well that didn’t happen. Deep down I knew it wouldn’t. The airline cancelled my ticket. Ok, I get it. But I was still determined to make my escape.

My son Steve once had a hydraulic lift mishap on his legs at the age of 14. He also had been holding cherished Van Halen concert tickets for months in his hands, and the concert day was approaching within 3 days of the accident. Positive Steve had a light at the end of his tunnel of pain. I believe it helped him cope, he just wanted to be THERE. He was determined beyond belief, crutches and all. That’s how I felt in 2020. I didn’t dwell on being here by myself once I had this plan to visit Hawaii. It was something I had to look forward to, something desperately needed.

So, again I booked a flight. This time instead of Honolulu I booked a ticket to Maui, which had just opened up to travelers on Oct 15th with the stipulation of taking and having a negative Covid test 72 hours before the flight for the safety of its own residents. I was in full agreement of this protocol. With our Covid numbers back on the rise I felt that if I’m going to do this, NOW IS THE TIME! My flight date was set…. this time for 11-11 and I knew THIS TIME IT WAS MEANT TO BE. Another factor I want to mention is that Southwest Airlines was still social distancing their flights with all middle seats remaining open until Dec 1, in which they would begin booking full flights once again. I was fortunate and got an entire row to myself round trip.

Originally my room was booked at a posh resort in Lahaina. I later changed it to a nice and comfortable room in Wailea. It was close to some great restaurants, shopping, and of course the beautiful beach.

I THOUGHT the hi-light of my trip was the remarkable 12 hour day trip to Hana to experience 620 curves and switchbacks along with 59 scary, single one way bridges. I’m sure glad I took a Polynesian Adventure Tour because the driving on such a narrow primitive road with cliffs on the edge would’ve been stressful to drive. I got to see the amazing rainforest with its lush foliage; coffee plants, banana trees, coconut palm trees, mango trees, avocado trees, citrus, painted desert eucalyptus trees, lipstick ginger plants, and the poisonous cyanide laced black bamboo trees. My soul quenched for such beautiful scenery from the breath taking waterfalls, black sand beaches, to lava rocks of all sizes. At Ke’Anae Park the ocean water seemed very active and electrifying, splashing and crashing against the lava boulders, all very close to the road. That particular area was devasted in 1945 by a tsunami which destroyed everything in its path except the church built in the late 1800’s. The church still stands along with its cemetery.

I fulfilled all my expectations I had on the road to Hana. It was my planned hi-light of this journey and nothing could make this trip more amazing….

UNTIL synchronicity had its own plan…..

On Sunday I took an hour drive out to Lahaina to see what’s out there, it turned out to be A LOT of resorts stacked much too close to each other! Driving through seemed too congested for my liking. I was glad I had changed my reservation to Wailea instead, it was more my pace. In Lehaina I stopped at a little art fair in which upon entering my temperature was taken as a safety measure. There weren’t many people walking around, nothing like our local pre-Covid art fairs I’ve been to. I walked around and admired all the beautiful handcrafted items wishing I had not done my souvenir shopping the day before. Not only did the art fair offer more variety but much better prices. I justified my shopping a day earlier knowing that the shop owner was very grateful for my purchase considering him and his wife owned it and admitted it’s been rough for them this year, but hopefully getting better.

As I was walking around I noticed this one booth and had to turn back to take a closer look. This booth seriously caught my eye. Not only did I see textured paintings of the beach and others of dragons and koi fish but what really caught my attention were these unique Alice In Wonderland themed jewelry. As I picked up a necklace in complete awe, the artist began telling me about her creations. I looked up and saw this woman with crazy fun bright red hair that made me miss mine BIG time! We started chatting about mixed media art and I felt an instant kinship, a soul sister. I ended up dragging myself away from her booth because I was feeling I could stay there forever discussing art with her. My senses were all on overload, if I had wanted to buy a piece it would’ve been overwhelming to choose one. She told me to look her up online, Fileena Bahris. I said I would and reluctantly said my good bye. I came back to the hotel completely exhausted. I needed sleep, so I did just that.

The next morning I woke up feeling regretful that I didn’t purchase just one piece for myself, nor did I get her contact info. This really bothered me, her unusual name would never have sticked so luckily she had me google her while I was at her booth. I checked my google history and there she was. It turns out Fileena is quite an accomplished artist, actress, and producer. Next I searched for her on Facebook and Instagram. I found her! I WAS THEN ON A MISSION TO BUY A PIECE BEFORE LEAVING MAUI THE NEXT DAY! Yes, panic set in. I wondered if she’d even look at her Facebook? Would she remember me if I tried ‘friending’ her? I remembered I had shown her a few of the crowns I had made. I quickly changed my profile and cover photos on Facebook to show my crowns, before the ‘friending’ attempt. Within 15 minutes she accepted my request! I then noticed she lived in Wailea, where I was staying! Excitedly…. I sent her an IM on Facebook with trepidation not knowing if she’d be available, would she have other plans or just needed to recuperate after her show. I went ahead and messaged her and told her I woke up regretting not choosing a piece to purchase. I told her I was staying in Wailea and asked her if she was nearby. It so happened that she lives there and not an hour away, where we first met at the art fair. I asked her if it was possible to get photos and prices for the Alice line here on Messenger, then perhaps we could meet up later? She said “of course, give me half hour because I need to get them from my car.” And she did. She sent lovely photos of her line which is called LOST IN TIME COLLECTION, WONDERLAND. I IM’d her “Hey, I’m starving care to meet for breakfast?” We met up within the hour at a seaside restaurant.

Fileena arrived seconds before I did. She got “my table” I had sat at several times with a lovely ocean view. Her mother Joanne, also an actress and producer joined us as this was one of her favorite restaurants and hadn’t realized they were open for business once again.

We had a wonderful breakfast, we all ordered the same omelette called ” A Fungus Amongstus” with a Diet Coke. The three of us all had the best connection! We sat and talked for HOURS, each of us condensing our own life stories. Fileena then picked up her phone and showed me her thousands of emails which were just too overwhelming to open up. Let me tell you, if I saw that number on my email icon I would seriously throw my phone away! Just the fact that I chose to IM her instead of email her worked out! It all happened the way it was meant to happen.

We talked about so many things, she told me how she and Joanne have traveled to the Land of Oz in Beech Mountain, North Carolina. WHAAAT? I never knew of this place!!! When Steve was alive he always bought me Wizard of Oz gifts, in fact I used to have a Wizard of Oz themed bathroom! I somehow felt that Steve was letting me know, “Mom!!! You gotta go check that place out!”

We talked about life, spirituality, and healing. These were deep conversations in which we all felt comfortable talking about. And of course I shopped.

Sadly I had to leave the following day, otherwise they were going to take me to their special places in Maui where I could interact with dolphins and see the sea turtles.

Another trip will happen again someday, until then I look forward to Fileena and Joanne visiting me in Arizona.

Diamond Paintings

I have been artfully detoured on what I believe I should be doing, only to realize that I am setting up my own disappointments with my own self-imposed expectations. So instead I’ve adopted a different more positive approach, it’s called just GO WITH THE FLOW!

Maybe you’ve heard of Diamond Paintings? They are similar to cross stitch embroidery and paint by numbers, but instead you are setting small faceted diamond-cut beads onto a preprinted sticky canvas. You then follow the ‘key’ printed on the side for the color layout and with a tool, you pick up the designated color and place it onto the canvas.

This last one I completed was a complete bummer once it arrived and I opened it. It was not anything as portrayed in the description to buy. The photo showed a finished piece with various sizes of sparkling cabochons. Well, it came with only regular sized dots (term for the faceted beads), definitely a misleading ‘sell’. Loving the image I went ahead and completed it, but still wanted to add sparkle to the Madonna’s halo as it was the main reason I purchased her to begin with.

Once my mind began to go beyond the Diamond Painting, it became a mixed media canvas!

I mounted her onto a canvas in which I painted a background onto and added my own sparkles. With the additional space on the canvas I added some diamond dot flowers on the bottom. I am very pleased with the result!

I have now completed three Diamond Paintings and have 3 more lined up. Yes, my addiction is now justified into my mixed media world. *smiling*

With Love and Affection,
